waiter serving customers

Being a waiter or waitress can be a rewarding career, but these restaurant positions need certain qualities to be successful. Being a good waiter or waitress requires more than just taking down orders and serving food. This blog will explain some qualities a good waiter or waitress typically displays.

1. Ability to Stay Positive

We all have bad days, and unfortunately, a waiter or waitress will eventually encounter a customer who may be rude toward restaurant employees. While it is natural to be rude to someone who is being rude to you, restaurant waiters and waitresses need to take the high road unless a customer is way out of line. Keeping a positive attitude towards a rude customer can prevent the customer from being more discontent. A positive attitude can also leave quite an impression on some customers and increase the chances they return to your establishment.

2. Knowledge of The Menu

Customers will frequently ask waiters or waitresses questions about the menu or for menu recommendations. If a waiter or waitress does not know the answer to a menu question, it can create an awkward situation. Waiters and waitresses do not have to memorize the menu front to back but should have a strong knowledge of what items are popular, how an item is cooked and which items contain popular allergens.

3. Remembering To Check in on Customers Regularly

Once you have taken customer orders and the food has been served, do not forget to check in on your customers. Checking in on your customers throughout their dining experience can ensure they are satisfied with the service and their meals.

4. Ability to Multi-Task

The restaurant space can be a busy environment, so waiters and waitresses need to master the skill of multi-tasking. If you feel like you may forget to do something, try writing it down on a notepad.

5. Strong Communication Skills

Last but certainly not least, a good waiter or waitress will have strong communication skills. Waiters and waitresses not only need to communicate with customers but with their fellow employees as well. Effective communication skills will go a long way in the restaurant space.
