restaurant manager checking sales

The restaurant industry is a competitve space, but restaurant sales coming in lower than your expectations can be frustrating regardless. If you feel like your restaurant is doing everything right but sales are not meeting expectations, this blog will explain possible reasons why that may be the case.

1. Strong Local Competition

Where there is one restaurant, there is usually another nearby. One of the biggest reasons a restaurant can see sales below expectations can be tied to strong competition from local restaurants. If restaurants in your area are as popular as your restaurant or more popular, it is important to figure out why.

2. Restaurant Pricing That Is Too High

Customers love a good deal. If your restaurant prices are expensive or more expensive than they should be, you could be losing out on a good amount of customers. Check on your restaurant margins and adjust your menu prices if necessary. You can also compare your menu prices against your competitors to see if there is an opportunity to undercut them.

3. The Enconomy

With prices rising everywhere and inflation as relevant as ever, some people cannot afford to eat at restaurants as much as they use to or want to. While this reason is mostly out of a restaurants control, restaurants can offer deals or coupons to entice people to dine out more.

4. A Less Than Stellar Reputation

A restaurant’s reputation is invaluable. Many people visit restaurants through word of mouth. If you have customers within your community telling others to give your restaurant a try, it can make a huge difference. On the flip side, if your restaurant has a less than stellar reputation amongst your community, it can hinder sales. On top of word of mouth, a restaurant needs to have good reviews online. A restaurant with glowing reviews online can stand out to users while a restaurant with subpar reviews can deter people from choosing a particular restaurant.
